Spotify reaches new milestone of 30 million subscribers

Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek has recently announced on Twitter that the streaming service now has 30 million paid subscribers, which is the latest update on the state of the platform since June 2015, when the figure was just over 20 million.

We have 30 million @Spotify subscribers, but none of them are in Cuba ... yet. So cool to see Cuba opening up! https://t.co/nZa67f0l8U

This is interesting indeed, as it means that competition from the likes of Apple Music and other services have done very little to hinder Spotify"s growth. Even though Apple Music has managed to hook over 11 million subscribers since launching in June 2015, Spotify too has added 10 million users to its own pool of paying customers, and Daniel didn"t mention the number of free users, previously estimated at 75 million.

Although Spotify"s growth doesn"t show signs of slowing down, the company still has to work harder if it wants to maintain it, especially when you consider that Apple is pushing their service into Android territory, and its marketing muscle is considerably stronger than what Spotify has.

Today"s news also indicates that the overall music streaming market still has enough room for growth, even with other services in the mix such as Deezer - which has 6 million paying subscribers, and Tidal - which has a more modest 1 million. It will be interesting to see how long it takes before music streaming services will have to fight for each other"s users.
