Spotify Video to launch on Android and iOS starting this week

You might remember a story we covered last year about Spotify planning to launch a video streaming service, starting with a paid model and moving to an advertisement-supported model instead. It looks like this is all finally coming together, though, with the first publicly available video-streaming features to be rolled out this week.

Spotify has been experimenting with video for a little while now, offering a small percentage of users from a select handful of countries access to the service, but they"ll be rolling it out to a wider audience over the next few days, with the Android app set to launch this week and the iOS app set to launch some time over the next thirty days.

The service will be initially launching in several countries, including the US and UK, and well as Germany and Sweden. As of now it looks like it will be mostly short clips rather than anything feature length, but if we consider the way the industry is moving then we might just see Spotify attempting to compete with Hulu and Netflix in the not-too-distant future.
