While Sprint is the only one of the four major wireless phone carriers in the US to offer truly unlimited data plans without caps or throttling speeds down, some have wondered if Sprint would extend that plan to the upcoming iPhone 4S. Today AllThingsD.com has confirmed that Sprint will indeed offer an unlimited data plan with its version of Apple"s smartphone. Plans will start with $69.99 a month which will offer Sprint customers 450 free voice minutes. If a customer wants both unlimited voice and data they will have to pay $99.99 a month for the iPhone 4S.
That will give Sprint a huge advantage over the other two iPhone 4S wireless carriers, Verizon and AT&T. Both of them have dumped their unlimited data plans for new customers, although current customers with such plans will have those contracts grandfathered in if they renew their deals. Sprint could have to deal with a big increase in data bandwidth once the iPhone 4S goes on sale on October 14. However, a Sprint spokesperson is quoted as saying, "We have every confidence in the ability of our 3G network to handle the influx of devices we expect to get. It certainly hasn’t been an issue to date."
As with Verizon and AT&T, Sprint will offer the iPhone 4S in three different versions; a 16 GB port for $199, a 32 GB for $299 and a 64 GB version for $399. It looks like Sprint won"t be selling the new $99 iPhone 4, which will stay with Verizon and AT&T, nor the free (with two year contract) iPhone 3GS which will remain an AT&T exclusive.
