Sprint may be the third largest wireless carrier in the US but the company was the first network to offer 4G speeds with its WiMax based network back in 2010, and is currently the only network that has a true unlimited data plan with no broadband caps or overage fees. But Sprint"s WiMax network has fallen into disfavor as both Verizon and AT&T have decided to embrace the LTE protocol. Now it looks like Sprint may be getting ready for some changes.
A number of media outlets, including Engadget, have reported receiving invites for a big Sprint press event to be held in New York City on October 7. At the moment all Sprint is saying is that it will offer a "strategy update" with a presentation by its executives followed by a Q&A session. Those few words have prompted media outlets to speculate on what might be discussed during the event. One likely possibility is that Sprint could announce the launch of its own LTE based wireless network; the company hasn"t added any new US cities to its WiMax network in 2011.
Another item that might be discussed during the press event are the rumors that Sprint will be selling Apple"s iPhone 5. This could be a game changer for Sprint if it allows iPhone customers to access its unlimited data plan, something that AT&T and Verizon have abandoned for their new customers.
