The third largest wireless carrier in the US is getting closer to reentering the Windows Phone family. Sprint launched some of the first Windows Phone 7 devices in the fall of 2010 but decided to pass when newer Windows Phone 7.5 smartphones were launched in 2011. In 2012, Sprint stopped selling Windows Phone 7 devices completely.
However, at CES 2013, Sprint finally confirmed that it would be selling Windows Phone 8 smartphones later this year. This week, Sprint launched a teaser landing site for its Windows Phone 8 arrival, which promotes the fact that the phones will run on Sprint"s "Truly Unlimited Data plans."
Sprint has already announced that the phones themselves will be made by Samsung and HTC, and statements made by their director of device delivery, Ryan Sullivan indicate that these phones will be all new devices, rather than those than are already being sold by other wireless carriers.
It will be interesting to see how Sprint markets their Windows Phone 8 smartphones when they are launched. We suspect that the carrier"s unlimited data plans will be a big bullet point when comparing their phones to those offered by Verizon and AT&T.
