Google Lens, the image recognition tool created by Google to assist mobile users in identifying objects and locations in an image, debuted in May last year. It was later made available exclusively on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL devices via Google Assistant prior to last month"s announcement for its wider release to other devices.
Building upon that premise, Google has now launched a standalone version of Google Lens on the Play Store. The app brings with it the same set of features already available on several Android phones including Samsung"s Galaxy S8 and S9 lineups and the Galaxy Note 8 via Google"s personal assistant. However, it doesn"t offer anything fresh.
The app allows users to:
Take action on text. Look up a dish right from the menu, add events to your calendar, get directions, call a number, translate words, and more. Or just copy and paste to save some time.
Learn more about the world. Explore popular landmarks. See ratings, hours of operation, historical facts and more.
Identify plants and animals. Find out what that plant is in your friend"s apartment, or what kind of dog you saw in the park.
Find a look you like. See an outfit that catches your eye? Or a chair that"s perfect for your living room? Find similar clothes, furniture, and home decor—without having to describe what you"re looking for in a search box.
It"s worth pointing out that the Google Lens app supports devices running only the Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) and up.
