On Sunday, we reported that the fund raising campaign for the upcoming PC space combat game Star Citizen had raised a total of $4.6 million with just one day to go. Today, the campaign ended and the effort to fund the next game from Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts ended up with a total of over $6.2 million.
Yes, that means the game raised another $1.6 million in just the last 24 hours or so. Roberts launched his own website at first to take donations for Star Citizen, but later launched a Kickstarter page to better take donations. The Kickstarter effort ended up with over $2.1 million all by itself.
In a post on the game"s official website, Roberts states:
Updates and features will continue, returning to a regular schedule in the next few days. The team needs a few days to collect ourselves and reform before jumping into the immense task ahead (after the last month, our husbands, wives, children and yes, pets, miss us!) We will also be launching new sections which have been in the works for some time: the Galactapedia will tell you more about the Star Citizen world, Engineering will introduce you to game mechanics that are being planned and Holovids will offer you video footage from the game as it takes shape.
The game itself is not expected to be released in its full version for at least two more years, but a small version of Star Citizen might be released to its backers before the end of 2013.
