Star Wars: Commander made its way to Windows devices back in 2014. The strategy game allowed users to join the Rebels or the Empire, and build and defend their own bases, while attacking others. The game grew in popularity over the years and currently boasts a 4.2/5 rating in the US Windows Store after a whopping 64,000 reviews. Unfortunately, Disney has now announced that it is retiring Star Wars: Commander on Windows devices, and that the title will no longer be available after June 30, 2017.
Disney noted that Star Wars: Commander is being retired on Windows devices in order to focus resources elsewhere. The company stated that:
The decision was difficult to make, but we feel it’s best to focus our energy and resources into making new digital experiences for our fans and community. We greatly appreciate all of the amazing engagement, passion and commitment to our apps. Thank you for playing.
Please note that this has no impact on STAR WARS™: Commander on other platforms, including iOS, Android, Amazon, and Facebook Gameroom, which will continue to be supported with new content and feature releases moving forward.
Disney also clarified that due to the imminent closure of the game on Windows devices, it has disabled in-app purchases, and users who bought in-game items recently will not be refunded.
All in all, this is yet again unwelcome news for Windows Store customers. While many popular apps and games including most of Telltale"s catalog, Resident Evil 7, Forza Horizon 3, and Gears of War 4, have made their way to the platform, numerous others including Dead Trigger 2, Angry Birds, Mint, and Path, have dropped support for it.
