Steam is still by far the biggest single source to purchase and download PC and Mac games. Today Valve has expanded its reach for Steam via a newly released mobile app for iOS and Android users. The app itself can be downloaded for free via Apple"s App Store or Google"s Android Marketplace but users will still have to sign up to participate in a closed beta test for the app before they can use it.
Valve founder Gabe Newell said the Steam mobile app comes from frequent requests from Steam users. He states in a press release:
Mobile is changing way people interact, play games and consume media, and the Steam app is part of our commitment to meet customer demands and expand the service functionality of Steam to make it richer and more accessible for everyone.
The app will allow Steam users to see if their friends are online and what game they might be playing at the time. They can also chat with their Steam friends via a chat client. The mobile app also allows people to check out the list of games currently available on Steam, check out screenshots from those games, read up on news and updates and be alerted if any Steam games get special price cuts.
Valve says that more users will be added to the Steam mobile app closed beta test as the service ramps up so if you are not picked to join the beta immediately you will likely get your turn in the near future.
