iTunes first launched for the Mac in 2001 but its use exploded when Apple decided to launch an iTunes client for Windows PCs in 2003. Since then Apple has released iTunes for its iOS products but other than that, the company has never chosen to add iTunes to more platforms.
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak believes Apple should expand their iTunes reach to other devices. TheNextWeb.com reports that, during an address today at TEDxBrussels, he stated his opinion that iTunes should be made available on as many platforms as possible. That includes having iTunes clients on both Android and Windows Phone devices.
It"s certainly an interesting proposition. Microsoft has not been shy about offering its own software products on other platforms. Xbox SmartGlass is now available for both Android and iOS and there are tons of rumors that we will seen Android and iOS ports for Microsoft Office in 2013. Also, having iTunes on Android and Windows Phone would certainly make things interesting for competing services such as Microsoft"s own Xbox Music, along with Google Play and others.
However, Apple has not been as open about launching its own software products for competing platforms. While the company has released a version of its Safari web browser for Windows, it has yet to release the latest Safari 6 build for Windows 7.
