A few days ago, Nokia announced that it had shipped 8.8 million Lumia smartphones in the third quarter of 2013. Today, the research firm Strategy Analytics announced that the total number of Windows Phone shipments worldwide for that same quarter reached 10.2 million units.
It"s the first time that the firm has shown Windows Phone unit shipments exceeding the 10 million mark, and is a huge jump compared to the 3.7 million units that were shipped for the same period a year ago. Strategy Analytics was quick to credit Nokia for the big boost, with higher sales in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
However, the market share for Windows Phone is still at a low level worldwide compared to Android and iOS, with 4.1 percent in the third quarter compared to Android with 81.3 percent and iOS at 13.4 percent. Blackberry brings up the rear; the firm said it now commands just 1 percent of the smartphone market share with shipments of just 2.5 million units for Q3. Android devices had a worldwide total of 204.4 million units shipped in the third quarter and iOS was second with 33.8 million.
