For several years, Microsoft"s mobile operating systems (Windows Mobile and later Windows Phone) have trailed in market share behind BlackBerry-based phones. Now a new report claims that is no longer the case, at least for the moment, in the US market.
Research firm Strategy Analytics has published a new report, and the online summary claims that in the fourth quarter of 2012, Windows Phone became the third biggest mobile OS in the US, as its market share topped BlackBerry for the first time since 2006; the firm is selling the full report with more details for a fee.
It"s not exactly a shock to hear that Windows Phone has topped BlackBerry in the US, as the launch of several new Nokia Lumia smartphones in November, along with the HTC Windows Phone 8X, likely boosted the market share; BlackBerry has seen its share go down in the past few years.
The big question: How long will this situation last? BlackBerry will launch the Z10 smartphone, based on BlackBerry 10, in the US sometime in mid-March. Reports have come in from the UK that sales of the BlackBerry Z10 have been great so far, but UK sales may not be a good way to predict how the smartphone will perform in the US market.
