Sun Microsystems is giving away free Opteron-based Sun workstations to Java developers. The catch is you have to sign on for a three-year subscription to Sun Java Studio Enterprise. For serious Java developers this is great news, and also for any other company/school that deals with Java.
Sun Microsystems Inc. Thursday said it will next week roll out a program to give a new Opteron-based Sun workstation to Java developers who sign on for a Sun tools subscription program. Officials at the Santa Clara, Calif., systems maker said Sun will give a new Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Opteron-based w1100z workstation to developers who sign up for a three-year subscription to the Sun Java Studio Enterprise program, said John Fowler, executive vice president of Sun"s Network Systems Group.
Sun"s Java Studio Enterprise system is a complete environment for Java developers to develop, test and deploy applications, Sun officials said. John Fanelli, product director for Sun"s Network Systems Group, said, "Sun is committed to bring out a complete Opteron line." The w1100z supports both Solaris for x86 and Linux operating systems, Fanelli said. "This allows the developer to have a single system with multiple development environments," he said.
