Qualcomm executives have claimed that the Snapdragon-powered Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet running on Windows RT 8.1 gives a much superior performance compared to the Microsoft Surface 2.
In an interview with CNET, Senior Vice President of Product Management for Application Processors, Raj Talluri, has said that, "The performance on the 2520 is brilliant," and "It"s really at the next level. It"s not even really a contest compared to Surface 2. In every area, it"s much bigger, faster, and lower power."
The Lumia 2520 which was launched at Nokia World 2013 in Abu Dhabi on October 22, is powered by a Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 2.2GHz quad-core processor with Adreno 330 GPU, while the Microsoft Surface 2 uses Nvidia Tegra 4 T40 1.7GHz quad-core processor with ULP GeForce GPU. Specifications wise the Lumia 2520 has some more advantages as well, which have been covered in our tablet shootout.
Talluri and his colleague Stephen Horton, a product management executive for tablets and other computing devices, believe that Microsoft opted for the Nvidia Tegra 4 due to the timing of the Surface 2 release as Snapdragon 800 was not ready yet.
Windows RT hasn"t gained the traction that Microsoft would have hoped for, but Qualcomm anticipates growth in Windows RT tablets as consumers and businesses realize the productivity opportunities that the platform offers and wants to stay committed to it in the long term.
