So far, the only official places that people in the US can purchase new Surface tablets from Microsoft is by going to one of the company"s retail stores or ordering it online on the Microsoft Store website. Now a new rumor claims that the Windows RT version of the Surface will become much more widely available.
Paul Thurrott, in a post on his Winsupersite.com page, claims, via unnamed sources, that Microsoft had planned in the past to start selling the Surface with Windows RT beyond its own Microsoft Stores in early 2013. However, he now claims Microsoft, " ... has apparently decided to ramp up the speed and make it happen before the holiday selling season is over." There"s already been reports that Verizon Wireless stores will begin to sell the Surface tablet, with demo displays already in place in some locations.
Thurrott also claims that Surface sales, even with its limited distribution in the US, are " ... actually selling very well ... ". Indeed, he claims that Surface sales are "one of the few bright spots" currently in Microsoft"s product lineup. Thurrott previously claimed that Windows 8 sales have so far been "well below Microsoft’s internal projections." For its part, Microsoft has said it sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses in its first month and that the upgrade rates for Windows 8 are surpassing those for Windows 7.
