As of this writing, the website is down "for improvements," but PCMag reports that T-Mobile has officially announced their G2 Android phone via their website. It will be the first phone to run on T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network, capable of 4G speeds. Sprint was the first carrier to roll out a 4G network using Clearwire’s WiMAX technology, and AT&T and Verizon both plan on implementing LTE networks to achieve 4G speeds.
The G2 will be the second offering in a line of phones that T-Mobile apparently plans to use when brand new technologies emerge, as the G1 was the first phone to feature Google’s Android mobile OS. Since that time, T-Mobile released a series of critically underwhelming Android handsets, the HTC myTouch line and Motorola CLIQ among others. T-Mobile will want to pull an EVO here and push the carrier back into the hardware competition. After all, it isn’t all about speed. The iPhone seems to be doing just fine despite AT&T’s nagging congestion issues.
According to PhoneArena.com, the phone may have the following specs (nothing confirmed yet):
- 3.7” touchscreen (480x800 resolution)
- Qualcomm MSM 7230 800Mhz processor
- Stock Android 2.2
- Slide-out Qwerty Keyboard
- 802.11b/g WiFi
No word yet on more details or pricing, but as soon as T-Mobile puts the promo site back up, we’ll let you know if more information emerges.
