It seems like T-Mobile is getting an early start on April Fool"s jokes, as the Un-carrier announced Phone BoothE today. Available this weekend in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Seattle, Phone BoothE promises freedom from the distractions and noise of making cellphone calls in public.
In an obvious move to troll AT&T"s 5G E, which is really just 4G LTE, CEO John Legere said in a video, "You know it"s real because we tacked an E on the end of the name. Wow!" He called it a "vertical, rectangular cube" and referred to "quadrillateral technology".
The booth offers soundproofing, so you won"t be bothered by car horns, constructions, and more. Included in the video are things like niece learning violin, slamming door after argument, eating chips, school orchestra, car horn, train horn, French horn, all other horns, noisy stuff, AT&T prattling about fake 5GE, and more.
PhoneBoothE includes a charger for your phone, and there"s also something called Magenta Pages. It"s a big screen that promises to seamlessly connect to your T-Mobile phone for video calls or browsing. You can also use the screen for taking a selfie with a background of your choice.
All weekend, you"ll be able to check out T-Mobile"s Phone BoothE at T-Mobile Park in Seattle during Mariners games, and from 9am-5pm outside of the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C. If you"re in New York City, you can also catch it from 9am-5pm. Today and Monday, it will be in Rockefeller Center North Plaza. On Saturday, it will be at Bowling Green, and on Sunday, it will be in Battery Park.
While this is likely an April Fool"s joke and a limited time thing, T-Mobile says that it plans to roll Phone BoothE out across the U.S. Right now, anyone can use one, but eventually, you"ll need an app so T-Mobile customers can access it for free. Of course, if that doesn"t happen, you can surely expect a statement from T-Mobile about how AT&T"s 5G E isn"t real either.
