According to T-Mobile CEO John Legere, when Microsoft launched its new Windows 10 Mobile flagships earlier this year, it excluded the carrier by choosing to go exclusive with AT&T. "If Microsoft wakes up," he said, "we"ll talk about T-Mobile carrying [the devices]."
Microsoft apparently hasn"t "woken up" yet, but T-Mo evidently hasn"t turned its back on the new OS. The carrier will instead offer the new "Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL with Windows 10 Mobile" - a device that almost sounds like it was named by Microsoft itself - which was officially unveiled today.
The handset"s key specs include:
- 5.5-inch display with HD (1280x720px) resolution
- Quad-core 1.1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 processor
- 2GB RAM
- 16GB onboard storage (plus microSD card support up to 32GB)
- 8MP rear camera with autofocus and 2x digital zoom
- 2MP front-facing camera
- 2500mAh battery (up to 12hrs talk time; up to 820hrs standby time)
- 4G LTE connectivity
- Voice over LTE (VoLTE) support
- T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling
The manufacturer says that the device will be "affordably priced" when it goes on sale exclusively on T-Mobile in the United States "in the coming weeks". However, exact pricing and launch date details have not yet been revealed. A version of the Fierce XL is already available with Android 5.1 Lollipop on T-Mobile"s MetroPCS prepaid wireless service, where it"s currently priced at $139 (or $69 after mail-in rebate).
Alcatel OneTouch also unveiled a much larger Windows 10 Mobile device at CES this week - the 8-inch "Pixi 3 (8)" with 4G LTE connectivity, which the company is marketing as "my first Windows tablet".
