Tech CEOs' antitrust hearing gets rescheduled for Wednesday

Earlier this week, it was reported that a Congressional hearing that would feature Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai via video link was going to be rescheduled due to a clash with a memorial service taking place on Monday for the late Representative John Lewis.

To avoid a conflict, the House Judiciary website has updated the virtual meeting to take place on Wednesday, July 29 at noon local time. According to a supporting document, the committee is inviting the CEOs to discuss online platforms and market power and will examine the dominance of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google in e-retail, social media, search, and smartphone software.

In the following weeks after the hearing, the committee will come together to decide whether these firms have too much power and will put their conclusions into a report. The report is expected to state whether legislation is needed to reduce these firms’ powers in their respective fields to create a more even playing field for competitors.

If you’re interested in watching the event, it will be live-streamed on the House Judiciary’s YouTube channel. The current live stream is still due to begin on Monday but this will be updated for the new time slot.
