Telegram 4.4 brings live locations to aid meetups

Telegram 4.4 has been pushed out for Android and iOS in the last day and it brings with it some very nifty features, one of which helps you meet your friends more easily. Telegram 4.4 includes several new languages including Russian, and brings a new media player which gives you more control over your music.

Discussing the Live Location feature, the Telegram blog says:

[…] you can broadcast your current location to any chat in real time … This is useful when you are on your way to an appointment or are trying to coordinate with friends at a large event. Instead of sending static locations on the map every minute you can now share your Live Location with the people you’re meeting – for 15 minutes, 1 hour, or 8 hours … To use this feature select ‘Location’ from the attachment menu and choose ‘Share My Location for…’

Of course, the live location feature even works in group chats too, so if you’re planning to meet a group of friends somewhere, you have a decent idea about how long that person, who claims to be just 10 minutes away, will actually take to arrive.

Secondly, a new media player has been bundled with Telegram with this update. It has been completely redesigned and has better support for the playback of MP3s and other music files you send and receive. Once a track is playing, you can pull up music controls and the playlist by pressing the mini-media controls at the top of the app.

Lastly, we’ve got the inclusion of more languages, namely, French, Indonesian, Malay, Russian and Ukrainian. More languages are in the pipeline with Persian also due soon. Telegram has also opened up the localization platform in order to suggest alterations to translations; everyone can suggest translations and vote for them. When changes are made to translations, users will receive the updates automatically, there will be no need for an entire app update.
