Tesla announces 'Ludicrous Mode' on Model S because 'fast' is not fast enough

Tesla - and it"s founder Elon Musk - are seen as the visionaries of transport and power in the future. If the company"s position as the most popular vendor of electronic vehicles was not enough, the company also has a vested interest in sending ships to space, providing internet to the world and allowing for inter-city transport at insane speeds through its Hyperloop plans. Yesterday"s announcement will allow owners of the Tesla Model S to crank the speed up a notch.

Hot on the heels of the "Insane Mode" upgrade that decreased the 0-60mph time from 4 second to 3.2 just a few months ago, Musk has now revealed a "Ludicrous Mode" for the automaker"s venerable Model S, allowing it to achieve the same in just 2.8 seconds. The front and the rear engines also receive a modest upgrade with 259 and 503 hp, respectively.

The upgrade will cost new owners $10,000 over the base model, while owners of existing cars can soup up their vehicles for $5,000 - but only within the next six months.

Other announcements included a 5 kWh battery pack upgrade for the 85 kWh model for $3,000 and a price drop for the 70 kWh model, which is now available for $70,000. Musk also hinted at a new Roadster:

There is of course one speed faster than ludicrous, but that is reserved for the next generation Roadster in 4 years: maximum plaid.
