Tesla is hosting a Model 3 delivery event on July 28, invites its top referrers

Tesla is hosting an event on July 28 to celebrate the launch of the Model 3 and begin delivering the highly anticipated electric sedan to its first customers – who happen to be the Tesla employees that helped design and build the vehicle.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared photos of the first production unit that rolled off Tesla’s assembly line in California just last week. Musk, who received the rights for it on his 46th birthday, will be the proud owner of the car.

At 9pm PT, outside Tesla’s Fremont plant in California, the private event will have an unknown number of top referral winners in attendance – people who own one of Tesla’s vehicles and have referred new Tesla customers.

The Model 3 with a starting price of $35,000 represents a milestone for Tesla; it’s an attempt at putting its electric cars in the hands of many, rather than the few who could afford the Model S and X. Yet, despite its somewhat affordable price, the car can do zero-to-60 mph in less than six seconds, and deliver 215 miles on a single charge.

October last year, Tesla announced that all its upcoming vehicles – including the Model 3 – will be equipped with fully autonomous driving systems; the vehicle will gain and enable self-driving features as government regulations catch up with the technology, simply by receiving over-the-air updates.

Tesla now has three models of cars – the S, 3, and X. The Model Y, an electric semi-truck, seems to be the next vehicle on Tesla’s horizon.
