Tesla is planning to build a factory to produce Supercharger V3 stations in China next year, according to documents seen by Reuters. The initiative will reportedly cost the automaker around $6.4 million, and the site has been selected in close vicinity of its Shangai factory. For now, the Shanghai factory has been restricted to manufacture Tesla"s Model 3 electric cars.
In a bid to curb pollution from petrol or diesel vehicles, China offers considerable subsidies to electric cars and has been developing its countrywide network of charging points. These measures have helped Tesla, which sold roughly 13,000 vehicles in the country last month.
The firm hopes that the new plant could be operational as early as February 2021. Once the factory is completed, Tesla aims to produce 10,000 chargers each year, the document read. For now, the chargers, which are installed in car parks or charging stations, are being imported from the United States.
Tesla"s Shanghai factory is aiming to manufacture 150,000 Model 3 cars in 2020. It has already started exporting some of the vehicles outside China.
