The 16-inch MacBook Pro can now be configured with a Radeon Pro 5600M with HBM2 memory

AMD announced today that the 16-inch MacBook Pro, originally released last year, is now available with the all-new Radeon Pro 5600M GPU. AMD says the new GPU is designed to "deliver desktop-class graphics performance", while still being efficient enough for a mobile device.

The Radeon Pro 5600M is built on a 7nm process, like the majority of AMD"s current hardware lineup, and it seems to be exclusive to the MacBook Pro 16-inch. It has 40 compute units, and 2560 stream processors, promising 5.3 TFLOPS of single-precision (FP32) performance. A notable addition with this card is that it has HBM2 memory rather than GDDR6. Here"s the list of specs:

GPU Compute Units Stream processors FP32 TFLOPS HBM2 Memory Memory Interface
Radeo Pro 5600M 40 2560 Up to 5.3 8GB 2048-bit

With this announcement, the Radeon Pro 5600M is now the highest-end GPU configuration available for the MacBook Pro. Previously, the top-end model would come with a Radeon Pro 5500M, which had 8GB of GDDR6 memory, 24 compute units, and 1,536 stream processors, for up to 4.0 TFLOPS of FP32 performance.

The new configuration option is available right now from Apple"s website, and you can get it with either the Core i7 or Core i9 models of the 16-inch MacBook Pro. However, it"s by far the most expensive GPU upgrade you can get, costing $800 more than the Radeon Pro 5300M in the Core i7 model, and $600 more than the second most expensive option.
