The AMD Ryzen 7 APU powering the Surface Laptop 4 may indeed be a last-gen chip

About three weeks ago, a report surfaced alleging that the AMD variant of Microsoft"s upcoming Surface Laptop 4 will be using last-gen Ryzen 4000 based processors and this is despite the fact that AMD had already released its succeeding Zen 3-based mobile 5000 series APUs then. As it turns out, the report may indeed be accurate as a UserBenchmark entry of a PC featuring the "AMD Ryzen 7 Microsoft Surface Edition" was spotted by Twitter leakster "APISAK". While this may not mean much on its own, it is the integrated graphics (iGP) on this unknown APU that gives away the information pertaining to the family of processors that it belongs to.

As AMD has stuck to using the Vega architecture for its integrated graphics - with tweaks and tuning here and there - since the initial Ryzen 2000 series APUs, UserBenchmark lists Vega as the iGPs for all families of these processors followed by the family number series, ie, Vega 4000 (for the Ryzen 4000) or Vega 5000 (for Ryzen 5000).

The AMD Ryzen 7 Microsoft Surface Edition which has been spotted today features the "RX Vega 8 4000" likely indicating that it belongs to the last-gen Zen 2-based Ryzen 4000 family, codenamed Renoir. The CPU appears to be an 8-core, 16-thread part with a base clock of 2 GHz. The SKU is most similar to the Ryzen 7 4800U albeit with higher clocks. The integrated Vega 8 is also seemingly performing better than other similar samples and this most probably as a result of the 16 gigs of dual-channel 4266MHz LPDDR4 memory that the device has since integrated graphics really loves fast system RAM speeds.

If rumors are to believed then both Intel and AMD variants of the Surface Laptop 4 will be launched by Microsoft sometime in mid-April at an event held virtually.
