It was only a couple of weeks ago when Elon Musk spoke with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti about the possibility of bringing a tunnel network to the city. While the talk didn"t gain Musk approval to start building out his ambitious network of underground channels officially, it hasn"t stopped him from producing a sample on his SpaceX property in Hawthorne, California.
Earlier this week, The Boring Company made progress by completing the first segment of its tunnel in Los Angeles. Along with the tunnel, it appears that the firm has also started working on the vehicle transport system that will shuttle a car from surface streets to the underground system. Musk stated in a tweet that it would be operational by next week.
The Boring Company emerged late last year when Musk thought there could be a solution to the traffic situation in the Los Angeles area. Since that time, the idea has evolved into a pet project, using its "Godot" tunneling machine to create channels in a more efficient manner than what has been achieved in the past.
If successful, the network will severely decrease the amount of congestion in the city, making way for a new form of travel. If Musk"s tenacity is any indication, we will probably be utilizing The Boring Company tunnels in Los Angeles and other cities relatively soon.
