The first public preview of Visual Studio 2022 for Mac is now live

In April, Microsoft announced the latest iteration of its IDE, dubbed Visual Studio 2022. The first preview of the software launched on Windows in June, and in the following month, a private preview for Mac was made available too. Now, Microsoft has revealed that Visual Studio 2022 has graduated from its private testing stage on Mac, and is available publicly as Visual Studio 2022 for Mac Preview 1.

Microsoft has emphasized that in this release, it has focused on providing a native macOS experience, which has further facilitated the utilization of assistive technologies such as macOS VoiceOver. The speed and stability of the IDE has been enhanced too and developers should face fewer crashes. There is also a new Git Changes video that is more consistent with other SKUs of Visual Studio.

Support is being added for .NET 6 and C# 10 via the .NET 6 RC1 release. As before, web and cloud development can still be done using .NET Core 3.1 and later, mobile development is supported via Xamarin Traditional projects, and game development is powered by Unity.

As we know, .NET Multi-platform App UI (MAUI) has been delayed to Q2 2022. So even though this public preview release of Visual Studio 2022 for Mac allows opening .NET MAUI projects, there is very little support as of now. This is planned to be enhanced in subsequent releases as we get closer to the general availability of .NET MAUI next year. In the meantime, you can download Visual Studio 2022 for Mac Preview 1 from here.
