Google has sent out invitations to an event next week in New York City, at which it says it will introduce "the new Google Earth". We haven"t heard much about Google Earth in recent months, as the company has seemed more focused on its more widely used Maps app on mobile devices and on the web.
In November, Google introduced virtual reality support for Maps, inviting users to "fly over a city, stand at the top of the highest peaks, and even soar into space" using its VR experience. But it sounds like Google has some more significant improvements on the way.
The company is promising "a first look at the brand new experience" for Google Earth at the April 18 event. That sounds like it could refer to a far more substantial overhaul of the entire user interface, rather than the addition of just one or two new features - and whatever Google has planned, it clearly believes the improvements are big enough to justify a standalone event.
