OnePlus has confirmed that its next flagship phone will be called the OnePlus 5. The new device will be the successor to the OnePlus 3T, which the company unveiled in November.
The company confirmed to The Verge that its new phone will arrive this summer, although it stopped short of divulging any details about the device. It"s rumored to have a dual-camera setup, and like its predecessors, it"s expected to feature plenty of high-end specs priced far below many other flagship-class devices, such as the LG G6 or Samsung"s Galaxy S8 and S8+.
You may well be wondering what happened to the "OnePlus 4". The company is skipping over that moniker as a result of tetraphobia - the belief that the number four is unlucky - which is common in many east Asian countries, including OnePlus" home market of China. It"s similar to the practice in the United States and other countries of omitting the 13th floor from buildings, or row 13 on passenger airliners - the product of triskaidekaphobia. Branding its phone with the number four could make it less appealing to buyers in markets where tetraphobia is widespread.
Of course, OnePlus won"t be the first company to make a leap in naming its products. Microsoft went from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, while Samsung jumped from the Galaxy Note5 to the Note7, although these decisions were not related to local superstitions.
The OnePlus 5 will be the company"s sixth phone, following the One, 2, 3, 3T and X. Given that the OnePlus 3T was such an impressive handset - in fact, it was one of the best devices that we reviewed last year - many potential buyers will be eagerly awaiting its arrival.
