For the second day of Qualcomm"s Snapdragon Technology Summit, it"s all about a deep dive on the Snapdragon 855, which was initially announced yesterday. But before that, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau took the stage to say that the company"s next handset will be the first to use the Snapdragon 855.
Lau also spent a good amount of time boasting how focused OnePlus is on 5G, also saying that the firm has partnered with EE to launch a 5G phone in the first half of 2019. Presumably, that phone will be the OnePlus 7, the same one that will be the first Snapdragon 855 device.
This news is a bit of a departure for Qualcomm. For the past couple of generations, the first company to get its hands on the newest chipset has been Samsung, which would announce its new Galaxy S at a Galaxy Unpacked event ahead of Mobile World Congress.
Pete Lau didn"t go into specifics as to when the OnePlus 7 will be available, but it seems likely that it will be at or shortly before Mobile World Congress.
Update: OnePlus has confirmed to Engadget that the announcement was the result of a miscommunication, and that it meant to say the phone will be among the first to feature a Snapdragon 855.
