The Sims Social crosses 50 million player mark on Facebook

Electronic Arts has a major Facebook game hit on its hands. The Sims Social, a version of EA"s long running "Sim" series, only launched a few weeks back, in late August. However, the game has already crossed the 50 million player mark, according to information from the Appdata web site. Appdata says that The Sims Social currently has over 51 million registered players, making it the second most popular current Facebook game. Only Zynga"s Cityville has more players, with over 74 million users as of writing.

The Sims Social is perhaps the biggest competition that Zynga has ever had in the Facebook game space. Other Zynga games continue to remain extremely popular -- such as Empires and Allies -- with over 37 million players, Farmville with over 36 million players and Texas Hold"em Poker with over 35 million players. Gamasutra reports that another game now owned by EA, Zuma Blitz (originally developed by PopCap Games) is also quickly gaining popularity on Facebook. It currently has 5.7 million players.

Zynga recently launched its newest Facebook game, Adventure World, which lets players engage in quests and fight off creatures and enemies in a virtual world that the company claims is 40 times the size of its older games. Last week, Zynga announced a new agreement with LucasArts that will let Adventure World players interact in some way with the classic movie hero Indiana Jones. That will happen sometime in October, but there"s no word on how the lead character of four popular movies will interact with the players inside Adventure World.
