Today, Google announced the third Android P developer preview, or the second public beta, which has been in testing since March. The most notable new feature is that the final APIs for the next major Android feature update are included, and that"s API level 28. Unfortunately, Google still hasn"t announced the actual name of the update.
Google called out a few new features in its blog post. The company partnered with DeepMind to use machine learning to improve battery life; the feature is called Adaptive Battery. Google says that it will work great with apps that are optimized for Doze, App Standby, and Background Limits. Another ML feature is App Actions, which surfaces your app at just the right time.
The Alphabet subsidiary also added support for display notches in Android P, including new APIs for "rich, edge-to-edge experience on the latest screens." Notifications are changing as well, with support for conversations, photos and stickers, and they can suggest smart replies.
Final APIs don"t mean that Android P will be released any day now. In fact, there will be two more developer previews between now and then, with the next one expected later this month and the fifth one expected in July. Both of those will be release candidates.
