Third-party Windows Phone tool allows for custom ROMs

After several months of development, long term Windows Phone hacker ‘Heathcliff’ has released a new tool dubbed ‘Windows Phone Internals’. This new tool allows end users to unlock the bootloader of several Lumia devices in order to enable root access or even to create and flash custom ROMs.

Root Access allows you to load your own homebrew software onto the phone with high privileges. Apps can escape from their sandboxes. The tool can also create backup-images of the phone and access the file-system in Mass Storage mode. The tool supports most versions of Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile.

The tool, while primarily aimed at Windows Phone power users and enthusiasts, will also allow developers to get in on the fun. Included alongside the tool is an SDK, which makes it easy for homebrew developers to access the on-disk file system and registry.

Members of the XDA Developer forums are known for tinkering with Windows Phone, so with another tool at their disposal it will be interesting to see what people come up with this time around.

Those looking to learn more and download the tool can head over to WPInternals.
