The iPhone is, without a doubt, one of the more popular smartphones in the world. While it is highly praised by users and reviewers alike, one thing that has come under scrutiny is Apple"s high pricing of its flash storage. Although Apple does offer the iPhone in three different sizes (16GB, 64GB, 128GB), the jump for each tier is an astounding $100 USD. While this might have been justified in the early days of flash storage memory production, prices have drastically fallen since then, making it clear that Apple is overpricing its offerings.
Luckily, there is a shop in China that is making progress on this front by offering its own $60 128GB upgrade. The process, as detailed in the video below, seems straightforward, but is fairly ambitious. While swapping chips seems obvious, the most interesting part is when they clone the ID software from one chip to another - making sure that your iPhone with upgraded storage will still have the same serial and other identifying values in place.
While this may seem like a pretty good investment, there are a couple of downsides that might well prove to be dealbreakers.
Not only does the procedure void your warranty, but you will also have to make a flight out to Shenzhen, China. But you never know - it may only be a matter of time before a repair shop in your area catches wind of this mod, and starts offering it in your part of the world.
