Thoroughbred to arrive in June

AN AMD EMAIL published by Extremetech said that its Thoroughbred desktop PC will now be launched on June 10th.

But we understand that many system integrators and the channel will not get the product until the second week in July, with supplies deliberately limited by AMD.

That is causing the small and medium sized companies that feel they"ve backed AMD to feel miffed - as they"re convinced that Compaq/HP, which will use the 2200+ XP, is likely to beat them to the market, much in the same way as Intel has favoured Dell in the past.

But HP/Compaq might get the processor earlier than most, other sources said, while supplies of Thoroughbreds in the channel may not hit the street until later in June and even July.

The email also shows that AMD appears to have decided to continue with the "Barton" core that looked for a while as if it might be pushed aside in the rush to Clawhammer.

The email from Extremetech gives no reason for the launch date, but we suspect it"s more to do with clearing the channel of existing stock rather than problems with the process technology, as has been rumoured.

There are also motherboard changes to be made to accept the Thoroughbred core.

AMD"s plans are to swap out the old Palomino core frequencies for the new Thoroughbred frequencies, but many had expected the firm to ship a 2200+ Palomino before now. While that could have been possible - it appears AMD has decided to bite the bullet across the whole range in a phased way. µ
