Even though Microsoft"s upcoming Xbox One game console will offer new ways to watch television, the current Xbox 360 is still adding media streaming apps on its own. Today, Microsoft and Time Warner Cable announced plans to launch the TWC TV app for the Xbox 360 later this summer.
In a post on the Xbox Wire blog, Microsoft said that when the app is launched, Time Warner Cable subscribers who also have a paid Xbox Live Gold account will be able to watch over 300 TV channels through the console such as AMC, BBC World News, Bravo, Cartoon Network, CNN, Comedy Central, Food Network, HGTV and more. The app will also be able to be controlled via voice for people who use the Kinect hardware add-on.
Time Warner Cable is the second largest cable TV provider in the US with service in 29 states. Only Comcast is larger; it already provides its own XFINITY TV app for the Xbox 360. Microsoft says there are now over 120 voice-controlled apps for the Xbox 360.
It will be interesting to see if the Xbox One will feature similar cable TV apps. Microsoft stated today that more information on the Xbox One"s entertainment options will be revealed in the coming months.
