Tiscali plans IP phones for homes

Tiscali is to offer broadband telephony and a video-on-demand service to its residential customers across Europe.

Broadband telephony using Voice over IP (VoIP) technology allows users to make calls over the internet, bypassing the traditional phone charges. The company plans to roll out its consumer service for VoIP calls in Italy in September, with a video-on-demand offering to follow by the end of 2004.

The service is expected to come to the UK before the end of this year.

With its video-on-demand service, Tiscali will serve television programmes and other video at high speed over the broadband connection. The firm is working with NetCentrex to provide the technology for the service.

"This agreement will enable Tiscali to provide all of its one million ADSL users with IP telephony services," said Olivier Hersent, chairman and chief technology officer of NetCentrex.
