On Monday, Microsoft announced that Windows RT devices would be available this fall from Dell, Lenovo and Samsung. Asus has also confirmed it will have a Windows RT tablet for Microsoft"s ARM-based operating system this fall. Of course, Microsoft will have it own Windows RT-based Surface for launch on October 26th. However, it looks like Toshiba will now be bailing out of the Windows RT launch party.
Slashgear.com reports that it has received a statement from Toshiba which states:
Toshiba has decided not to introduce Windows RT models due to delayed components that would make a timely launch impossible. For the time being, Toshiba will focus on bringing Windows 8 products to market. We will continue to look into the possibility of Windows RT products in the future while monitoring market conditions.
Toshiba did show off a prototype tablet to members of the media in mid-June that was running on Windows RT. That tablet had a OMAP 4470 SoC processor from Texas Instrument inside, along with a PowerVR SGX544 graphics processor.
Toshiba did not go into detail on what caused these hardware component delays. It"s possible that the TI processor that Toshiba picked simply isn"t ready in mass quantities yet. Other Windows RT devices are based on NVIDIA"s Tegra chip and Qualcomm"s Snapdragon processor.
