Creative Assembly is back with the second in its planned-out Total War: Warhammer trilogy, with the aptly titled Total War: Warhammer II. The game brings a brand new campaign, four new factions, new units, various monsters such as fire-breathing dragons, and more.
The developer faces the difficult task of surpassing its entry from last year, which grew to be immensely popular among players and critics alike. The gameplay sticks to the usual Total War formula, featuring a turn-based strategy map where city and army management takes place, along with massive real-time battles for clashes between armies and sieges.
Leaving behind the Humans, Vampire Counts, Green Skins, and Dwarves, of the previous game Total War: Warhammer II takes players to new continents, introducing the High Elves, Dark Elves, Lizardmen, and the recently revealed Skaven factions.
The game"s new Vortex narrative campaign has each faction trying to take control or stabilize a giant magical vortex that seems quite nasty. The campaign synopsis taken from the game"s store page sheds some light on what exactly is this Great Vortex, seen below.
Millennia ago, besieged by a Chaos invasion, a conclave of High Elf mages forged a vast, arcane vortex. Its purpose was to draw the Winds of Magic from the world as a sinkhole drains an ocean, and blast the Daemonic hordes back to the Realm of Chaos. Now the Great Vortex falters, and the world again stands at the brink of ruin.
Powerful forces move to heal the maelstrom and avert catastrophe. Yet others seek to harness its terrible energies for their own bitter purpose. The race is on, and the very fate of the world will lie in the hands of the victor.
For players that own both Total War: Warhammer entries, Creative Assembly is also planning to launch a free update soon that will combine the two campaigns into one single massive campaign. Players will even be able to tackle this combined campaign with any race, may it be from the original or the new game.
In addition to the usual multiplayer modes, cooperative play is also back, where two players can join together and tackle the campaign.
Total War: Warhammer II is now out and available on Steam for $59.99, and anyone who purchases the game during the first week will receive Norsca faction DLC for the original game for free.
