Turn your iPod Touch into an iPhone (sort of)

The iPod Touch is basically a slimmer version of Apple"s iPhone, but without any 3G wireless connection. Now the same company that previously marketed a 4G-based iPhone add-on sleeve is doing the same thing for the iPod Touch.

Today, FreedomPop announced it is taking pre-orders for the iPod Touch Freedom Sleeve for $99. The sleeve itself will work with the with third and fourth generation iPod Touch models. It also has its own lithium polymer battery, which News.com says should run for up to six hours. It also turns the iPod Touch into a wireless hot spot for up to eight more devices.

The Freedom Sleeve is supposed to connect to the 3G and 4G networks of Sprint and Clear. Even better, FreedomPop will give users 500 MB of free data per month. So if you use the iPod Touch mainly at home on your local WiFi network, but take it outside occasionally, the free wireless data plan could come in handy if you just want to check some email or do some quick web surfing.

FreedomPop also says people can get an extra 10 MB of free data per month for the Freedom Sleeve each time they refer a friend to their service, up to 1 GB. They can also get extra free data via special offers. Users have the option of purchasing data for $10 a GB per month and the device is scheduled to ship later this summer.
