Evan Williams, co-founder, board member and investor of Twitter has stepped down after less than two years as CEO. Also famed as the founder of Pyra Labs, the creator of blog-authoring software Blogger, the 38 year old has stated he will stay working for Twitter, but in a new role.
COO Dick Costolo will take over, making him the third CEO in the four years Twitter has been online. Williams seems to think he is the best candidate as he wrote on his blog. "When I insisted on bringing Dick into the COO role a year ago, I got a lot of questions from my board. But I knew Dick would be a strong complement to me, and this has proven to be the case. During his year at Twitter, he has been a critical leader in devising and executing our revenue efforts, while simultaneously and effectively making the trains run on time in the office."
He later writes that “I am most satisfied while pushing product direction. Building things is my passion, and I’ve never been more excited or optimistic about what we have to build.” He also tells us what he plans to do next as he follows up with “Starting today, I’ll be completely focused on product strategy.”
Williams founded Twitter in 2006 alongside partners Biz Stone and Jack Dorsey, but when Dorsey, the first Twitter CEO, stepped down from his position two years ago, Williams took his position.
Twitter recently revamped the website"s design for a more appealing look, which with over 160 million registered users -- and this number continuously growing, it was surely a controversial subject.
