According to Twitter"s latest transparency report, the social media giant has taken various steps to combat terrorism on the site, including the shutdown of 636,248 accounts which promoted terror since August 2015.
The report, which details measures taken between the start of July and the end of December last year, states that Twitter shut down nearly 377,000 accounts for promotion of terrorism within this time period. Twitter further states that 74% of these suspended accounts were detected by internal spam-fighting tools. In comparison, previous figures outlined that only one-third of accounts were detected in this manner.
Twitter has faced tough criticism with regard to terrorism, with the British Home Affairs Minister having criticised Twitter, as well as Facebook and YouTube, for "consciously failing" to stop terrorism and extremism being promoted on their sites back in August 2016.
Twitter also faced a lawsuit last year, which claimed that the social media site had perpetuated the spreading of terrorist propaganda by allowing ISIS members to maintain Twitter accounts. A federal judge later ruled that Twitter was not liable for content written by third parties on the platform.
Twitter has been releasing bi-annual transparency reports since 2012 to show trends in legal and intellectual property requests, privacy practices, and responses. Twitter"s latest reports can be viewed at this link.
