Twitter no longer counts @ replies towards the 140-character limit

Twitter has famously had the 140-character limit imposed ever since its inception, a limit which was modeled after the 160-character allowance for SMS. Last year, the firm announced it would stop counting media attachments, polls and Quote Tweets towards this limit. Now, yet another integral feature of the social networking site will stop affecting your overall character count.

We"re changing replies so that you have all 140 characters to express yourself.

According to the company, with this move, conversations are simplified, because now:

  • Who you are replying to will appear above the Tweet text rather than within the Tweet text itself, so you have more characters to have conversations.
  • You can tap on “Replying to…” to easily see and control who’s part of your conversation.
  • When reading a conversation, you’ll actually see what people are saying, rather than seeing lots of @usernames at the start of a Tweet.

The update is rolling out now to the main website, along with the firm"s iOS and Android apps. In order to take advantage of this feature on your phone, you"ll need to update the corresponding application.
