Twitter opens up verification process; verified users suddenly less cool

Any Twitter user is familiar with the checkmark that means that another user is verified, and let"s face it, we"re all a bit jealous. For years, the feature has been an exclusive one, but no more. Today, Twitter will be opening up the verification process to everyone.

In fact, since the company began verifying accounts back in 2009, there are over 187,000 verified Twitter accounts. Some examples would be @KimKardashian and @MaryJoFoley.

Twitter"s vice president of User Services Tina Bhatnagar said the following:

We want to make it even easier for people to find creators and influencers on Twitter so it makes sense for us to let people apply for verification. We hope opening up this application process results in more people finding great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for these creators and influencers to connect with a broader audience.

Allowing users to apply for verification has been a long-requested feature on the social network. It"s right up there with an option to edit tweets.

Your account will need the following before you submit it to be verified:

  • A verified phone number

  • A confirmed email address

  • A bio

  • A profile photo

  • A birthday (for accounts that are not company, brand, or organization accounts)

  • A website

  • Tweets set as public in Tweet privacy settings

Twitter has a longer list of tips for a successful verification process, which you can check out here. You"ll be able to sign up for it here; however, the form isn"t available yet, as it states that it will be rolling out over the next few days.
