More than a month ago, Twitter updated its Windows 10 Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app to a Progress Web App (PWA). The updated PWA featured a number of improvements including the extended character limit of 280 and the ability to bookmark tweets. The company also updated the Windows 10 Mobile app to PWA, breaking notifications and live tiles in the process since the platform does not support many core PWA functionalities.
Now, Twitter engineer Charlie Croom has penned a blog post stating that the company"s PWA represents a "renewed commitment to Windows".
Croom detailed that the Twitter PWA has been optimized for the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, so that it leverages the technologies offered by the platform to bring a faster and improved end-user experience. He stated that:
This release represents a renewed commitment to Windows that has been long overdue and is part of a longer-term strategy to reach greater feature parity to all of our platforms. We wanted to make sure the app represented a modern Twitter experience, while taking advantage of unique Windows features, like support for Windows native APIs such as share integration, pinned tiles, jump links, and more. We want to continue providing our Microsoft users with the latest and greatest, and will be adding additional features like night mode, in the coming weeks and months.
The company has encouraged everyone to update to the latest version of the app once they download the April 2018 Update as older versions will not be supported after June 1.
