Uber has been denied a new operating license in London

Transport for London, the local authority in charge of issuing operating licenses for taxi companies in London, has today rejected ride-hailing service Uber"s application for a new license to operate.

The authority has declared that the company is not "fit and proper", has failed to uphold corporate responsibilities, and subsequently, will not be allowed a new license. Uber"s current license will expire in eight days time, but Uber does have 21 days to appeal the decision and can continue until that process is over.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has outlined some further details which may have informed the local authority"s decision.

Uber is no stranger to controversy; having this year already had a former employee describe a highly sexist working environment, as well stories that it uses a "GreyBall" tool to evade local authority officials. Uber would be losing a major global city if this decision was upheld.
