Ubisoft announces Tom Clancy's XDefiant, a free-to-play class-based shooter

The Tom Clancy gaming universe that Ubisoft has been steadily expanding just got a little larger, as the company brought forth XDefiant to the spotlight today. Developed by Ubisoft San Francisco, It is a free-to-play shooter offering arena combat, personalized roles, abilities, and grounded gunplay. Find the reveal trailer with gameplay snippets below.

XDefiant is mashing together other Tom Clancy franchises to form the various factions (classes) players can choose from, including Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, and The Division. Like other hero/class-based shooters, the fully customizable characters, named Defiants here, come with traits, abilities, and a special ultra to give their team an edge.

While abilities will help, Ubisoft says winning rounds in this six versus six competitive setup will come down to players" skill with aiming. The rounds will feature the usual array of match types, from objective-based modes to TDM. Moreover, the class, abilities, and weapon loadout will be available for change on every respawn, so nobody will be stuck for an entire match with what they chose.

Tom Clancy’s XDefiant does not have a launch date attached to it yet, but when it is ready, it will hit PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, as well as Ubisoft Connect, Luna, and Stadia with cross-play support. Ubisoft is planning to host an early test session for interested PC players in the US and Canada starting on August 5. Head here to register for a slot.

As XDefiant gets added to Ubisoft"s upcoming games pipeline, two of its titles received delays just last week, with Rainbow Six Extraction and Riders Republic being pushed back from their September launch windows.
