Answering fan prayers, Ubisoft today confirmed the beloved stealth series Splinter Cell is coming back. The original 2002 game that started the video game journey of Sam Fisher is being given the remake treatment. Ubisoft Toronto is in charge of the brand-new project, the same team that delivered the last entry Blacklist all the way back in 2013.
Speaking as to why the original game is being remade and not remastered like many recent releases, Ubisoft said it wants to take advantage of modern technologies more and deliver an experience that will appeal to current audiences.
While information on the project is still minimal, Ubisoft did confirm this to be a linear experience like the original, and not an open-world title. The heavy stealth elements, gadgetry, and outsmarting enemies will also be core pillars of the remake.
"It"s safe to say a lot of us on the team are stealth purists," said Splinter Cell remake"s creative director Chris Auty. "We"re behind that level of seriousness when it comes to those kinds of mechanics, and those sorts of things that we want to see in this game. And we"re very, very aware of what makes classic Splinter Cell what it is."
Ubisoft Toronto is using the Snowdrop engine to develop the remake. For those unfamiliar, developed by Massive Entertainment, Snowdrop has powered The Division games and is also the engine behind the in-development Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and the open-world Star Wars project.
In more good news, however, the company also confirmed the remake will lay the foundation for the future of the series. The bad news is that the Splinter Cell remake sounds like it"s a long way off though, as Ubisoft Toronto is currently hiring for the development team. At the same time, don"t forget a Splinter Cell VR experience is in the works too.
