The Massive Entertainment developed RTS title, World in Conflict, was back in the spotlight ten years after its launch when Ubisoft began giving the game away for free earlier this month. However, while the single-player portion is entirely functional, the game"s official multiplayer servers were shut down back in 2015.
And now two years later, Ubisoft has made the source code behind Massgate open to everyone, the central server that handled the game"s dedicated servers, accounts, ladders, and other multiplayer aspects.
A community developed alternative server to restore the game"s multiplayer has also been available for some time now, with a whole new multiplayer community forming around it. Ubisoft stated in its announcement that the "efforts and passion" of this community were the reasons behind the source code release.
While this release makes the probability of Ubisoft ordering a sequel to the RTS title anytime soon a pretty slim one, it"s likely that we will see a resurgence in the game"s popularity as more players will be able to set up their own dedicated servers.
Anyone interested in the Massgate source code can find it on Github here, which also includes instructions on how to get started. Meanwhile, don"t forget that World in Conflict: Complete Edition is still being given away for free via Uplay, alongside Assassin"s Creed IV: Black Flag, and Watch Dogs.
