Announced ahead of IFA this year, Dell"s XPS 13 is the first to use Intel"s new 10th-generation "Comet Lake" processors. And while this device was released shortly thereafter, the model with a Core i7-10710U wasn"t released until October.
What makes the Core i7-10710U special is that it"s the first hexa-core U-series processor. All of the eighth-generation models, along with the 10th-generation Core i7-10510U, are quad-core. Before that, they were all dual-core.
In fact, Intel"s 10th-generation lineup is more confusing than that. There"s also Ice Lake, which is made on a 10nm process. Dell"s XPS 13 2-in-1 was actually the first to use Ice Lake. Comet Lake is still 14nm, and it"s meant to be more for productivity tasks than Ice Lake.
There really isn"t anything else that"s different about the new XPS 13. It"s still a 13-inch laptop with a tiny footprint, thanks to the InfinityEdge display. Like the last generation, the webcam is finally moved to the top of the screen, rather than below it. And unfortunately, that move means that there"s no IR camera for Windows Hello.
